Chapter 22

Sabrina couldn’t say getting through Zürich customs had been a cakewalk, but thanks to one of Gage’s resources in Germany who had a brother-in-law with airport security, they passed through without a hitch.

But without her weapons.

To be honest, she hadn’t expected to get her firearms into the country, and Nitro would make sure they didn’t go without a means of personal defense, but she preferred her own. Gage explained that he could have tapped his friend for access, but it would have taken ten hours to wait for the right person to be in position to allow their weapons through unchecked.

Josh didn’t have any minutes to spare, much less hours.

Her heart ached every time she thought about Josh being in Rikker’s hands. Josh had never expected to have someone like Trish and now ... he had a child on the way.

Time to slap her mind back into line.

Thinking about unproductive and distracting things would get in the way—and maybe get them killed.

She needed to slide into her normal op-in-progress mode, shutting out everything except what had to be accomplished. Having a personal stake in this op was making it damn hard.

Due to dragging her carry-on bag, her right hand was doing a clumsy job of typing a text one-handed. She almost dropped her phone.

Gage put his hand on her arm.

When she looked up, he smiled at her as if the sun had risen in her eyes.

Where had that ridiculous thought come from?

She asked, “What?”

His words were only loud enough for her to hear. “We’re supposed to be on holiday. You look like you’re headed for the guillotine.”

Oh, so that was why he smiled at her.

She stretched her neck, licked her lips, catching a heated look from him, and broke out a happy woman look. “Got it.”

His eyebrows climbed in a not-sold look. “I know you’re worried, but we have to look—and act—the part. As a team.”

When she said nothing else, he reached over and caught the handle of her carry-on. “At least look like you’re happy to have help.”

“Sorry.” She smiled for real and released her hold on the bag. She didn’t have to prove to anyone that she could carry her own luggage, for crying out loud.

Gage led the way toward the exit.

She sent another text to Margaux, who was sharing everything she found with Dingo, who was doing the same. That way, one of them should be able to get through to Sabrina at any time.

That also meant Sabrina could get through to Dingo as well. If luck didn’t fall her way and she was physically unable to make the trip with the panel due to being injured, then Dingo would go.

That worked as long as he wasn’t dead.

Dingo and Josh would do anything to get to her just as she’d do the same.

No questions. No hesitation.

She hadn’t thought Gage could understand, but after his admission about his sister ... maybe he did.

Outside of Kloten Airport, smokers sucked on what might be either their first or last cigarettes.
